7 Vacation Destinations with a Beach, But Not on the Coast

7 Vacation Destinations with a Beach, But Not on the Coast
Escape the crowd! We present to you 7 dream destinations in Romania with beaches and refreshing water, where you can fully relax in the middle of nature.

On hot summer days, the Romanian seaside often becomes far too crowded to offer the peace you desire, and the highway traffic along with the long drive can seriously test your patience. Fortunately, Romania hides numerous superb alternatives where you can take a dip in peace, far from the chaos of seaside resorts. We have gathered seven fantastic locations, from mountain lakes to natural pools, where you can cool off and rest in the middle of nature.

1. Ciucaș Waterfall

Ciucaș Waterfall is a true oasis of coolness in the middle of nature, hidden in the Hășdate Gorge, on the lower course of the stream of the same name. Located near the village of Cornești and just 50 kilometers from Cluj-Napoca, this destination is recommended by more and more travel bloggers as the perfect, refreshing alternative to the crowded seaside.

Ciucaș Waterfall has a height of 5 meters, and at its foot lies a small lake where the water cascading from above collects, forming ripples. This lake is ideal for swimming, even if the water is a bit cold for some. Next to the lake, there are two other hollows in the rocks where, thanks to the fast-flowing water, you can relax just like in a jacuzzi. The stream coming from the Turda Gorge cuts its way through the hard stone and winnows between steep cliffs, offering a wonderful view.

The easiest way to get here is from the entrance of Cheia village: right next to the bridge crossing the Arieș River, you must turn left, then follow a gravel road for about two kilometers to the riverbank.

2. Tarnița Lake

We remain in the same region to find one of the most popular weekend destinations for locals: Tarnița Lake. Located less than an hour's drive from Cluj-Napoca, this place becomes packed during the hot summer days. Many visitors consider that the mountain landscape and clean air here can compete on equal terms with any beach on the coast. The lake is completely embraced by high hills and dense forests, which provide pleasant shade and a cool atmosphere on summer days.

This reservoir is 8 kilometers long and is fed by the clean waters of the Someșul Cald. On the shores of the lake, you will find several specially designated areas, perfect for sunbathing and a refreshing swimming session in its deep waters. If you don't just want to laze in the sun, you can try a lot of water sports at Tarnița: you can rent pedal boats, take boat trips, paddle a kayak, or test your balance on a SUP (stand-up paddleboard).

3. Șuncuiuș Beach

Many call this place "the sea at the mountains". It is located at the foot of the Pădurea Craiului Mountains, in the Apuseni Natural Park. The beach is situated right on the banks of the Crișul Repede River, where a huge and impressive cliff wall rises on the other side of the water. Some compare the landscape to the exotic beaches of Thailand.

Although the area has remained completely wild, the beach is set up with fine sand and sunbeds. In addition, Green Resort in Șuncuiuș offers many activities worth trying, such as: rafting, kayaking, via ferrata, western horseback riding, paintball in the forest, bubble soccer, archery, and mountain scooter descents.

4. Ghioroc Beach

Dubbed the "Seaside of the West", Ghioroc Lake is located just 22 kilometers from Arad, right at the foot of the Zărand Mountains. During the summer, this place becomes the favorite destination for locals and beyond, being the number one hotspot for relaxation, sunbathing, and fun.

The lakeshore is arranged exactly like a seaside resort: tourists find here a beach with fine sand, palm trees, sunbeds, and pedal boats for rent. There is also a campsite with a capacity of 48 places operating on the premises.

5. Peninsula Natural Pool

Few people know that Romania is home to the largest natural pool in Eastern Europe. It can be found just 10 kilometers from the city of Baia Mare, within the Peninsula complex, spanning a massive area of 18,000 square meters.

In this park, you have everything you need for complete relaxation: comfortable sunbeds, hamace, bean bags, a food court, a playground for children, a sand volleyball court, and spaces for yoga and pilates. From time to time, concerts are also organized here.

6. Samskara Beach

Samskara Beach is located on the Borcea branch of the Danube, in the city of Călărași, quite close to Bucharest. Locals know this place as "Plaja Mare".

The island can be reached from the city by a catamaran that runs every 15 minutes, between 8:30 AM and 8:30 PM. In addition to the beach, the island offers numerous activities: football, volleyball, and foot-tennis courts, hiking through the forest, boat trips on the Danube, and fishing spots. While adults relax, the little ones can have fun at a safe playground.

Opened in 2022, the complex provides two unique accommodation options: 9 hand-decorated rooms with private bathrooms in the Born Rich Village area, and 19 cozy "A-frame" cabins, perfect for an escape into nature, in the Born Wild Village area.

Colibița Lake is a beautiful reservoir nestled in the Călimani Mountains, which attracts tourists like a magnet every year. During the summer, the place becomes highly sought after due to its clean and cool water, perfect for sunbathing. In addition, it is said that right here you can enjoy the cleanest and most ozonated air in the entire country.

The lake sits at an altitude of 900 meters, and its surface is dotted with small green islands, offering a fairytale panorama. Kayaks, pedal boats, and fishing boats constantly navigate the water, so active travelers will definitely not get bored.
