Adrenaline on the Rocks: The Most Thrilling Via Ferrata Routes in Romania
Looking for a bit of movement and adrenaline? Try the most beautiful via ferrata routes in Romania!

For a long time, the world of vertical rock faces was the exclusive privilege of professional climbers, equipped with ropes, chocks, and advanced technical knowledge. Fortunately, with the emergence of via ferrata routes and their amazing development in Romania, this world has opened up to the general public. These routes, equipped with steel cables, metal rungs, iron pegs, and sometimes spectacular suspension bridges, allow any tourist with an average fitness level to safely experience the unique sensation of height. We have selected a few wonderful places that are well worth trying this summer.

Essential Information Before Setting Off

The basis of a successful and safe via ferrata adventure lies in conscious preparation and choosing the right gear. Before you leave, it is extremely important to evaluate your physical condition and ensure you do not suffer from vertigo (fear of heights). Routes are marked with letters following the international model, ranging from grade A (very easy, family-friendly routes that can be completed even with children) up to grades D, E, and F (extremely difficult, featuring overhanging rock sections that require considerable arm strength, physical endurance, and climbing technique). As a beginner, always choose a shorter and more accessible route to master the technical movements safely.

Although completing a via ferrata route does not involve complex rope maneuvers, tackling the rock without specialized protective gear is extremely dangerous and strictly forbidden. The mandatory safety kit comprises a climbing harness, a special lanyard with a shock absorber, and two automatic carabiners. In the event of a fall, the role of the absorber is to cushion the impact on the body. Additionally, the basic gear strictly includes a climbing helmet—for protection against falling rocks—and appropriate footwear, such as mountain boots with high-grip soles or approach shoes. While moving along the metal cable, at least one carabiner of the lanyard must remain clipped to the cable at all times, and at the anchor points (pegs), you must always move only one carabiner at a time to the next section.

Checking the weather forecast represents another critical stage in the preparation phase. In conditions of storms, rain, or lightning, the metal cables on the route can act as giant lightning rods, while the wet rock loses its grip and becomes extremely slippery. Once your specific gear is complete and the weather conditions are confirmed to be favorable, mountain enthusiasts can confidently choose to tackle some of the most spectacular routes in the country.

Astragalus (Bicaz Gorges)

Astragalus is the longest via ferrata route in Romania, boasting over 1200 meters of equipped sections and a vertical drop of approximately 300 meters. The route starts in the area of the Cabana Ecolog (Eco-Chalet) and gradually climbs up the limestone walls of the Stânișoara Mountains.

The difficulty of the paths varies from grade B, which is relatively easy, up to grades D and E, which are highly technical and require arm strength and endurance. From the upper vantage points, you get a superb panoramic view over the Suhardul Mic massif.

Wild Ferenc (Red Lake / Lacul Roșu)

Located in the immediate vicinity of the Bicaz Gorges, on the southern slope of the Suhardul Mic massif, the "Wild Ferenc" route rises spectacularly above the Red Lake. This vertical route represents one of the most popular and appreciated destinations for via ferrata practitioners across the country. The route has a length of approximately 200 meters and a vertical drop of 173 meters. It features a steady difficulty of grade C and D, meaning that to set off on it you need a basic physical condition and the total absence of a fear of heights. The most spectacular and photographed spot on the route is a suspension bridge that crosses a deep crevice in the rock. Here, you step on cables directly above the void while maintaining your balance. Reaching the summit, situated at an altitude of 1345 meters, offers a memorable experience from where the entire panorama of the Red Lake reveals itself spectacularly in all its splendor.

Sky Fly (Turda Gorges / Cheile Turzii)

Located near Cluj, the Turda Gorges are one of Romania's most spectacular natural wonders, and hidden among their monumental limestone walls is the via ferrata route called "Sky Fly." This route has a length of 350 meters and a vertical drop of 150 meters from the starting point to the top, which translates into about 1.5 to 2 hours of intense climbing. It is no mere playground, being classified mainly as a grade C and D route composed of long and technical sections. The limestone in the Turda Gorges is very compact, smooth, and vertical in this area, and because there are fewer artificial metal steps or platforms, you will often have to use the natural holds of the rock to advance, offering an authentic climbing experience.

Sky Fly is a real challenge, where the Hășdate stream and the tiny silhouettes of tourists in the gorges can be seen far beneath your feet. Due to the intense sensation of height and the physical effort involved, this route is recommended primarily for those who already have some via ferrata experience.

The Via Ferrata Route in the Râșnov Gorges

For an active weekend in the Brașov region, the Râșnov Gorges represent a landmark destination. The route set up in this area extends over a length of approximately 300 meters, with a vertical drop of 200 meters. The line of the route is characterized by dynamism and variety: more accessible segments, ideal for rest, alternate with exposed vertical sections that demand maximum concentration. The central element of the ascent is a Vietnamese-style suspension bridge (on three cables), which crosses a deep abyss and tests the balance of the bravest climbers.

Completing the route takes an average of 2 to 3 hours, depending on physical fitness. To maintain the cables and ensure safety conditions, access to the route is subject to a fee, with tickets usually costing between 20 and 30 lei. This adventure integrates perfectly into a full weekend program, as the climb can be excellently combined with a visit to the nearby Râșnov Citadel. And if you are looking for other ideas for active exploration in the region, the attractions and trails in the neighboring resort of Bușteni are definitely worth considering.

Casa Zmeului / The Dragon's House (Vadu Crișului)

Situated in the Apuseni Mountains, the "Casa Zmeului" route in Vadu Crișului is famous above all for its suspension bridge, which is approximately 25 meters long and serves as a classic reference point in the photos of via ferrata lovers. The route is classified with a grade C difficulty and contains several steep, vertical, and physically demanding sections, which can be comfortably completed in about 3 hours. Since this section requires better preparation, it is not recommended for beginners on their own. It is advised that initial theoretical knowledge and confidence on the rock be gained on more accessible school-routes nearby before tackling the technical wall at Casa Zmeului.
