Children's Day in Cluj
We are just one step away from the month of June. Nature has bloomed beautifully, the days are getting longer and warmer, and the end of the school year is drawing closer. Plus, this year, Pentecost falls exactly on June 1st, International Children's Day.
Finally, we have the chance to leave behind the daily hustle, school or work stress, and spend quality time together. On this day, we adults can feel like children again too. But where does this holiday, which we take for granted today, come from, and how did the tradition of Children's Day begin?
The Origin of Children's Day
The recognition of children's rights and well-being, as well as the idea of a day dedicated to them, are not the result of a modern marketing strategy. The roots of Children's Day go back beyond the 1920s, a time when the world was trying to recover from the destruction of World War I. In those hard times, it became clear that the most vulnerable members of society—the children—suffered the most, and global cooperation was needed for their protection.
The official process began in 1925, when the World Conference for the Well-being of Children was organized in Geneva. Representatives from many countries gathered at this historic meeting to discuss the living conditions of little ones, their right to education, healthcare, and the elimination of child labor. At the end of the conference, the Geneva Declaration on the Rights of the Child was adopted. This was the first international document stating that minors have the right to special attention and protection, making it society's duty to offer its best to future generations.
Although the conference suggested introducing an international day, setting the exact date and the form of the celebration was left up to each country. Over the years, two main directions developed: a large part of the world—including former Eastern Bloc countries—chose June 1st as the official Children's Day, while many Western states, following a UN proposal, celebrate Universal Children's Day on November 20th (marking the adoption of the Declaration of the Rights of the Child in 1959 and the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989). Even though the dates are different, the message is the same everywhere: children are the guarantee of the future, and they deserve safety and happy, carefree days.
Children's Day is that one day of the year when the rules become a little more flexible, when bedtime can be pushed back, and when dessert can be eaten before lunch. Usually, families try to spend this day outdoors with fun activities. City parks, playgrounds, and green spaces fill with life. Classic activities include picnics, bicycle or scooter rides, and ball games. Colorful butterflies or superhero masks painted on children's faces, giant soap balloons, and the sweet taste of cotton candy have become universal symbols of this day. Many parents prefer to give experiences as gifts, such as going to the zoo, amusement parks, or puppet theaters. The Romanian Parliament voted in the autumn of 2016 to change the law, making June 1st a public holiday, so families were able to celebrate together for the first time in 2017.
Cluj, the Capital of Joy for Children
On June 1st, events dedicated to children are organized in almost all cities and villages, where the little ones can play and have fun together. However, if you are looking for the most diverse and interesting events this year, come to Cluj! The city on the Someș River is preparing not just for one or two events, but with a real marathon of activities spread over several days, suitable for all ages.
Hai-Hui printre povești in the Central Park
The center of the fun has been the Central Park for several years now, turning into a real storybook world thanks to the "Hai-Hui printre povești" (Wandering Through Stories) event. The activities organized by the "Puck" Puppet Theater last from morning till night, and the best news is that all programs are completely free! Under the cool shade of the trees, there will be a succession of theater plays, concerts, dance performances, and creative workshops.

The Duck Race on the Someș River
One of the most spectacular events of this long weekend will be the 2026 Cluj-Napoca Duck Race, which on Monday, June 1st, will turn the Someș River into a yellow sea. This program is not just a game, but a broad community experience with a strong charitable purpose, carried out through the "Adopt a Duck" campaign.
The concept is very simple and fun: before the event, families can symbolically adopt one or more rubber ducks, each having a unique number. On June 1st, the organizers will launch thousands of these ducks into the Someș River at the start line. The river's current will start this incredible race, while children and parents cheer and encourage their own duck from the riverbank, hoping it will reach the destination first. The adopters of the fastest ducks will, of course, receive attractive prizes. The most beautiful part is that all funds raised from the duck adoptions are donated to charity, giving children the chance to learn, through play, how wonderful it is to help others.
