Cape Doloșman: The only rocky cliff of the Romanian coast and its forgotten ruins
Discover Cape Doloșman and the ancient ruins of Argamum! Plan your next vacation in Dobrogea and explore wild landscapes.

If you are planning a vacation in Dobrogea this summer, there is a place where wild nature and ancient history meet in an absolutely breathtaking way. We are talking about Cape Doloșman, the only rocky cliff in Romania that rises directly at the meeting point of Lakes Razim and Golovița. Located in the southwestern part of the Danube Delta, this spot is just a few kilometers away from the well-known fishing village of Jurilovca. Cape Doloșman is a protected natural area, rightly considered one of the most spectacular and special places in Dobrogea. It is the perfect destination if you want to escape the crowds, enjoy the peace, and take in an incredible panorama.

As it is integrated into the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve, accessing this perimeter requires a visitor permit, which can be purchased very easily in advance, either online or from local vending machines. The main starting point toward this destination is the locality of Jurilovca – famous for its modern harbor –, followed by just a short drive. To protect the area, experienced travelers recommend leaving your car in the designated parking lot next to the tourist information board and continuing the exploration on foot for a complete experience in nature.

Argamum Fortress

The ruins of the former ancient fortress of Argamum (Orgame, in Greek) lie on the rocky plateau. This archaeological site is the first documented Greek settlement on the current territory of Romania, mentioned by historians as far back as the 6th century BC.

The city was founded by Greek colonists coming from Miletus. They chose this location with a brilliant strategic sense, as the Black Sea gulf of that time (the current Lake Razim) offered a safe harbor for their ships. Later, during the Roman and Byzantine eras, Argamum remained an important port city and military base. According to archaeological excavations, during its golden age, the city boasted powerful defensive walls, monumental basilicas, Roman baths, and extensive residential quarters.

Climate and geographical changes brought the decline of the port's golden era. Due to alluvial deposits, the gulf closed up and formed Lake Razim. Without direct access to the sea, port activity collapsed, and the once-magnificent city was gradually abandoned, leaving behind only mystery-filled ruins.

The terrain has remained completely wild, making comfortable trekking shoes essential for the visit. Besides its history, Cape Doloșman is a true paradise for hikers and nature photographers, thanks to the infinite horizon and the rare bird species that can be observed on the cliffs. The path winding along the high cliff corresponds to a medium-difficulty hike, offering a fantastic panorama over the water. Due to the rocky terrain, the height of the cliff, and the lack of safety railings, the trail poses a high level of risk for small children. Visitors are advised to proceed with caution and avoid getting close to the steep edge.

Must-See Attractions in the Area

A visit to Cape Doloșman can easily be combined with a larger trip through Dobrogea, as you will find several iconic places nearby. The closest stop is Jurilovca, which is worth visiting in its own right. The village is famous for its modern tourist port, as well as for its traditional Lipovan houses—painted in the specific white-and-blue colors and covered with thatched roofs—which faithfully preserve the atmosphere of the old fishing community. After the hike, Jurilovca will also pamper your taste buds: excellent fish-specialty restaurants in the village – such as La Năvod, Orka, the family-run Casa Ilinica, or the atmospheric Sailors – await you with fresh local dishes. If you end up here, it is a must to taste the authentic fish soup made from fresh fish, which is a true emblem of the region!

Once at the port of Jurilovca, a boat trip to Gura Portiței becomes an unmissable experience. Fast boats and motorized launches depart regularly from the port, turning the water crossing into a short, relaxing, and highly enjoyable ride for tourists. Gura Portiței is a completely unique place: a narrow strip of sand that separates the fresh water of Lake Golovița from the salty waves of the Black Sea. The beach here stretches for miles, and on the central, fully-equipped section, comfortable sun loungers and umbrellas await you during the summer season. Behind the beach, you can find accommodation units, a thatched-roof restaurant, a swimming pool, and sports fields, making it the ideal place for total relaxation and disconnecting.

If you crave even more history and fascinating landscapes after relaxing on the beach, the most spectacular medieval fortress in the region, Enisala Fortress, is located near Cape Doloșman. Built on a high cliff, the stronghold was constructed in the second half of the 14th century. A walk among the old walls and bastions offers an unforgettable experience due to the exceptional panorama: the fortress opens up to a breathtaking view over the vast lakes of Razim and Babadag, providing a magical spectacle, especially at sunset.
