About the Târgu Mureș Zoo
The history of the Târgu Mureș Zoo spans more than half a century, having first opened its doors to visitors in 1964. The creation of the zoo is tied to the name of László Rend. Enthusiastic volunteers and dedicated specialists gathered around him, working together through devotions and hard work to build the zoo's initial footprint of just 600 to 700 square meters. At the first official opening on August 23, 1964, the entire animal population consisted of just three wolves, two bears, two wild boars, two pheasants, and a deer. However, the institution's area grew rapidly, expanding to 20 hectares by 1965, and through continuous developments over the years, it gradually reached its impressive current size.
Today, the zoo covers an area of 42 hectares, and the number of species and individual animals living here has multiplied over recent decades. Currently, around seven hundred and fifty animals reside here, representing over one hundred and fifty local and exotic species. In addition to being the largest zoo in the country by surface area, it is also the only zoo in Romania that holds Asian elephants, giraffes, and gibbons. Inside the massive enclosures, visitors can observe these remarkable representatives of the animal kingdom in conditions close to their natural habitats, making a walk through the grounds truly unique.
A thorough tour of the zoo and a comfortable exploration of its attractions takes at least two hours, though families can easily spend an entire day here. Throughout the zoo grounds, there are charming pavilions and covered rest areas where you can comfortably relax during your walk and enjoy food and drinks bought from the zoo kiosks or brought from home. These designated spots offer a great opportunity to enjoy the wonderful views alongside the company of friends and family. A special feature of the park is the panoramic tower, from which everyone can admire the surrounding forest and the zoo enclosures below from a bird's-eye view. This unique perspective allows for an exciting and educational look at the animals' daily behaviors and activities from above.

The location of the Târgu Mureș Zoo is also completely unique, set on the eastern side of the city atop the beautiful Platoul Cornești, 488 meters above sea level and about 197 meters above the city itself. The "Great Forest" covering Platoul Cornești, comprised mainly of native hornbeam and beech trees, provides an ideal environment and natural protection for the zoo, allowing the species living here to truly feel at home. The forest itself extends across approximately five hundred hectares, forty-five of which house the zoo as well as the popular playground, mini-train, walking paths, and recreational park built on Platoul Cornești.
Festive Programs and Public Feedings on World Animal Day
In partnership with the Milvus Group nature conservation organization, the Târgu Mureș Zoo welcomes visitors on October 4, 2026, for World Animal Day with a rich schedule of activities, public feedings, and an educational presentation. The primary goal of the festive event is to showcase how animals and nature prepare for the cold season and to highlight how the public can help wild species during the harsh winter months. This themed day creates a great opportunity for children and adults alike to learn about nature conservation in an engaging yet professionally sound way.
The special event series begins in the Green House located on the park grounds, where experienced specialists from the Milvus Group will deliver an interactive presentation on how wildlife prepares for the winter period. During the talk, participants can learn how animal diets and behaviors change as the cold sets in, alongside practical tips on winter bird feeding. Following the presentation, visitors can attend the day's most anticipated highlights: the special public feedings. The program schedule begins at 12:00 with the feeding of the white storks, followed by the majestic deer feast at 12:30. At 13:00 comes the feeding of one of the zoo's biggest favorites, the Asian elephant, and finally at 13:30, attendees can watch the feeding of the playful Bennett's wallabies and emus up close.
World Animal Day is an excellent occasion to collectively draw attention to responsible pet ownership, endangered species conservation, and the fragile balance of nature.
