Rupea Fortress: A Perfect Afternoon Escape
Just an hour from Brașov, Rupea Fortress is the ideal escape from the city hustle. Discover history, Transylvanian panoramas, and relaxation in a medieval setting.

Traveling on the E60 European road between Brașov and Sighișoara, it is impossible not to look up toward the sky. Above the town of Rupea, perched atop a hill, stands one of the most beautiful fortifications in Romania: Rupea Fortress.

This location is perfect for a day trip. It is located very close to Brașov, just 60 kilometers away, meaning it can be reached in about an hour by car. It is the perfect place to take refuge not only on weekends but also at the end of a busy day—a quick escape from the city bustle, right where the silence helps you disconnect. During this season, the fortress remains open until late in the evening, giving you plenty of time to walk around and admire the sunset from its walls.

As soon as you pass through the main gate, you immediately feel the atmosphere of centuries past. The fortress spans 11 hectares and, in the past, was not just a defensive site but a small town where hundreds of people lived permanently. Nearly a hundred small houses were lined up between the walls, providing safety for families from the surrounding areas. Although some say the fortress was built on the site of a Dacian or Roman settlement, what we see today is a medieval creation. Its first documentary attestation dates back to 1324, marking the moment when the Saxons, rebelling against the authorities of the time, sought shelter and protection within its walls.

The construction of the fortress spanned centuries, with the walls being constantly raised and modified. The structure is divided into three main parts, depending on the height of the hill:

  • The Upper Fortress: The oldest part, built between the 10th and 14th centuries. It is located at the highest point of the hill.

  • The Middle Fortress: Built between the 15th and 17th centuries, this was the area where most of the houses and administrative buildings were located.

  • The Lower Fortress: The newest part, built in the 18th century, providing larger spaces for economic activities.

The great pride of the locals is the invincibility of the fortress. Built directly on the rock and protected by thick walls, the fortification remained unconquered in battle throughout its entire history. Although it fell into decay after the 18th century, the fortress was completely restored between 2010 and 2012, regaining its former majesty.

What can you see inside the fortress walls?

Exploring the fortress, you will discover towers with unique histories. A memorable example is the Bacon Tower (Turnul Slăninii), located in the Lower Fortress. Its unusual name hides a practical utility: the thick stone walls maintained a constant temperature, making the tower the ideal place for locals to store their meat and bacon supplies during the summer. Next to it is the Servants' Tower (Turnul Slujitorilor), a tall building that served as a residence for the fortress guards.

Another important point located near the gate is the Military Storehouse (Magazia Militară), which over time served as an arms depot. Very close by is the Fortress Well, which is 41 meters deep. Digging the well directly into the rocky massif was a colossal engineering effort in 1623. It was the pillar of survival, ensuring the vital water resource without which resistance against prolonged sieges would have been impossible.

In the Middle Fortress, you can see the Pentagonal Tower (Turnul Pentagonal), which reflects the influence of Italian Renaissance architects. The Scribes' Tower is also located here, where important community deeds and documents were kept to protect them from fires or thieves. There is also a special hall where officials met to make important decisions.

The highlight of the visit is undoubtedly arriving at the Cottage at the Top (Căsuța din Vârf). Although the path winding toward the highest point is a bit steep and requires a little physical effort, the reward is well worth it. Once you reach the highest platform, a panoramic view of the entire Transylvanian landscape opens up before you. The height grants you the privilege of admiring the essence of Transylvania: an infinite succession of forests and rolling hills, among which Saxon settlements can be seen. Everything seems frozen in time, with fortified churches piercing the sky and red roofs giving life to the entire area.
