Top Attractions in Constanța and the Surrounding Area
Turn your beach vacation into a complete experience. Discover Constanța!

If this summer you choose the Romanian seaside and want to do something more than just sunbathing and swimming, the city of Constanța is the perfect place. Beyond its current status as a seaside metropolis, Constanța hides a fascinating history: its origins lie in the ancient city of Tomis, founded by Greek colonists from Miletus. This early heritage places the settlement among the oldest continuously inhabited localities in the country. The city's current name comes from the Roman era: Emperor Constantine the Great named the settlement after his beloved sister, Flavia Iulia Constantia. This multicultural past, defined by the harmonious blend of Greek, Roman, Ottoman, and modern Romanian influences, gives Constanța a unique atmosphere that is well worth discovering on foot. To help travelers, we have selected the most important attractions, historical sights, and leisure activities that no one should miss during a visit to the area.

Constanța Casino

One of the most iconic attractions on the Romanian seaside is the Constanța Casino, which has already become the official symbol of the city. Designed in the Art Nouveau style, the former casino is no longer famous today for gambling, but for art and exclusive elegance. The history of the casino begins back in the early 1900s. The transition from a modest wooden structure to an imposing palace of stone and marble radically marked the history of the promenade. Completed in 1910 under the guidance of the talented architect Daniel Renard, the new building immediately stood out in the landscape of the era. In the first decades of the 20th century, the monument acted as a true magnet for high society and the cultural elites of Europe.

Recently, the building underwent a complex restoration. The Casino now functions as a modern cultural center on the city's promenade. Impressive, interactive, and immersive exhibitions have been set up within its walls, such as the exhibition "She. The Queen and the Sea," where the past comes to life with the help of 3D historical reconstructions and digital animations. The building also hosts exclusive events, such as the theater and cabaret show Casino Mon Amour, while the superb Mirror Hall offers an unforgettable experience. Both the grand interior staircases and the historical promenade provide the ideal setting for memorable photos by the sea. As the most photographed attraction in Constanța, the building attracts numerous tourists daily, and its interior can be visited from Tuesday to Sunday.

The Genoese Lighthouse

Right next to the Casino, on the promenade, lies another small but highly significant historical monument: the Genoese Lighthouse. This octagonal tower, carved from blocks of white stone, pays homage to Constanța's maritime past. Beyond the popular myth that the tower was built entirely by the Genoese, the modern history of the monument hides an interesting international collaboration. The shape it takes today was finalized by a British railway company, under the guidance and according to the plans of the French engineer Arturi Blondin. Although its activity ceased permanently with the development of the modern port, the lighthouse continues to watch majestically from the edge of the promenade. Currently, the historical monument represents an ideal stopping point for an atmospheric photo during a relaxing walk through the Old Town.

Tomis Port and the Panoramic Wheel

Just a short pedestrian walk from the Casino stretches the modern tourist port, an area dedicated to yachts that has established itself as one of the most lively and popular meeting points in the city. The promenade is lined with numerous terraces and restaurants, making it the ideal place to feel the vibrant pulse of Constanța. The area comes to life especially in the afternoon and evening hours, when the sunset lights up the luxury yachts and sailboats floating on the water. The area represents an excellent location for romantic walks or for a seafood dinner at one of the premium restaurants and terraces lined along the shore. In addition, the port functions as the main departure point for the most popular boat cruises out to sea, private sailboat tours, or adrenaline-filled trips with motorboats. The city's famous panoramic wheel is also located here, a must-see attraction: rising high up, a superb view opens up to you, with a complete panorama over the anchored boats, the endless blue, and the historical rooftops of the Old Town.

Ovidiu Square and the Old Town

From the port, a short walk leads to the historical heart of Constanța, Ovidiu Square, which exudes a true multicultural and Mediterranean atmosphere thanks to its centuries-old buildings. In the center of the spacious, paved square stands the bronze statue of the famous Latin poet Publius Ovidius Naso, who spent the last years of his life here in ancient Tomis. Behind the statue lies the National History and Archaeology Museum. Wandering through the narrow streets that branch off from the square, you can admire architectural rarities and hidden treasures, such as the famous and mysterious House with Lions, the Theiler House, or even one of the narrowest streets in Romania, Vântului Street.

The Grand Mosque of Constanța

Located just a few steps from Ovidiu Square, the Grand Mosque (also known as the Carol I Mosque) is one of the most important religious and architectural monuments in Dobrogea. From an architectural point of view, this building marked an absolute technological premiere at a national level. It was the first structure in the country to use reinforced concrete, an essential innovation to support its impressive dome and elegant minaret. Combining architectural elements of Neo-Egyptian, Byzantine, and traditional Romanian styles, the interior of the building welcomes its visitors with marble columns and impressive murals.

The huge oriental carpet, over two hundred years old, saved from the flooded island of Ada Kaleh, is also preserved here, having been donated to the mosque by the Turkish sultan. The main attraction, however, is the high minaret: climbing the narrow and steep spiral staircase, the top balcony opens up to the most beautiful panorama on the entire Romanian seaside over the Old Town, the sea, and the port.

The Constanța Dolphinarium and the Natural Sciences Museum Complex

If you want to head towards nature and the animal world after the historical Old Town, the complex located on Mamaia Boulevard is one of the best choices. This huge visitor center is a perfect example of harmony between nature protection, science, and quality entertainment. The central element of the complex is the Dolphinarium, which since its foundation has been one of the first institutions of its kind in Southeast Europe. During the demonstrations held in the modern, covered hall, the intelligent Bottlenose dolphins delight the public with their incredible acrobatic jumps and playfulness. Students and pupils benefit from reduced entry fees, and for the youngest children, the visit is completely free.

This superb, green, and natural-looking park is home to numerous animal species: visitors can observe up close pelicans, peacocks, wild boars, deer, and tropical decorative birds, which are rarely seen in Europe.

Within the same complex is also the first Planetarium in the country, which offers a true virtual journey through time across the universe. With the help of modern projection technology, you can discover constellations, planets, and galaxies under the immense dome. A professional riding arena with a covered field also operates within the complex, where you can try horseback riding.

Aqua Magic

Located a short distance from the historical center of the city, Aqua Magic represents the ideal alternative for fun and relaxation. The complex offers facilities adapted to all ages: the little ones can enjoy safe pools and dedicated play areas, while thrill-seekers have the opportunity to try spectacular and adrenaline-filled slides, such as SpaceBowl, MultiSlide, or Mega Pipe.
