You're about to embark on a wonderful adventure into the world of books and travel, and Romania is a destination that offers much in this regard! This year, we suggest you include in your holiday plans, or alongside them, some of the most captivating book fairs in the country.

Here are a few recommendations that will surely pique your interest and delight your book-loving soul!

 

  • The International Book Fair Gaudeamus in Bucharest:

 

The Gaudeamus International Book Fair in Bucharest is the largest event of its kind in Romania and one of the most important in Eastern Europe. Here, you'll find prestigious publishers, renowned authors, and a plethora of new and interesting books. The atmosphere is captivating, offering the perfect opportunity to interact with writers, discover new releases, and add to your personal book collection.

This year, the event is scheduled for October 16th - 20th.

Last year's 30th edition took place from November 22nd - 26th.

It's also worth noting that related events are held in several cities across the country. The recent editions were in Craiova from March 13th - 17th and Cluj-Napoca from April 24th - 28th.

The 17th edition of the International Book Salon Bookfest will take place from May 29th to June 2nd, 2024, at the Romexpo Exhibition Center in Bucharest.

The organizers have announced that the Guest of Honor for this edition will be the Republic of Moldova. Visitors to this section will have the opportunity to participate in debates, book launches, and meetings with cultural and literary figures from both sides of the Prut River.

The official website of the event describes Bookfest as "the most important book salon in Romania and the only event in the publishing industry that has achieved a significant international dimension."

At last year's edition from May 24th - 28th, over 170 exhibitors were present. Throughout the five days, more than 400 events were organized, ranging from book launches and debates to film screenings and interactive events.

Bookfest has local editions in Timișoara, Cluj-Napoca, Târgu Mureș, Brașov, and another international edition in Chișinău.

The Transylvania International Book Festival, FICT, in Cluj-Napoca reached its 9th edition last year, held from September 28th to October 1st.

Last year's theme was "AI and the Book," drawing parallels between modern technologies and books, highlighting that there is not an incompatibility, but rather complementarity.

The capital city of Covasna County, Sfântu Gheorghe, will host the third edition of the Sepsi Book Contemporary Book and Literature Fair from May 23rd to May 26th.

The event is a celebration of written culture and encounters with books, a literary and community experience, according to the organizers. They promise "the best editorial production in the region, creating an opportunity for authors from Romania and Hungary to connect with each other and their readers at the crossroads of cultures. Sepsi Book is the only book fair in the region committed to a literary-artistic dialogue in Hungarian and Romanian, offering a program and a selection of multilingual books."
