Danube Panorama in Mehedinți County
Looking at the map of Romania, most travelers immediately turn their attention to the most popular destinations: the vibrant avenues of Bucharest, the lively university atmosphere of Cluj-Napoca, or the cobblestone squares of Sibiu attract crowds of visitors every year. While these cities undoubtedly offer plenty of experiences, the country also holds corners that remain somewhat overlooked. One of these secluded, surprisingly diverse areas is Mehedinți County. We have selected two accommodations from stayhere.ro that make the perfect base if you are visiting the Iron Gates region.
Vega Resort Orșova
Orșova sits at the western gateway of Mehedinți County, in a location truly unique on its own: it stretches directly along the scenic bay formed at the confluence of the Danube and Cerna rivers. The sight of mountain ridges mirrored on the water's surface captivates visitors from the very first moment.
Today's Orșova is actually a modern town preserving the memory of a submerged past. At the turn of the 1960s and 1970s, with the construction of the Iron Gates I hydroelectric dam and the damming of the Danube, the historic old town was permanently submerged by the river. The settlement was rebuilt on higher slopes, so the current promenades and terraces offer open, sweeping views over the water. Orșova is the primary departure point for river cruises and boat tours, and while strolling through the town center, it is worth admiring the tent-shaped Roman Catholic church built in the early 1970s—a rare example of modern ecclesiastical architecture along the riverbank.

Bliss Dubova
Continuing along the Danube from Orșova, you reach the area of Dubova. This is where the famous Danube Gorges begin, where the river winds between towering limestone cliffs at the foot of the mountains.
The region's most iconic landmark is the Rock Sculpture of Decebalus, carved directly into the rock face in Mraconia Bay. Standing 55 meters high and 25 meters wide, this bas-relief is the tallest stone sculpture in Europe—just six meters shorter than New York's Statue of Liberty. The monumental work was initiated and funded by historian and businessman Iosif Constantin Drăgan: twelve climbing sculptors worked for an entire decade suspended high above the water, using a ton of dynamite and pneumatic drills to shape the rock. The location carries deep symbolic meaning: the Dacian ruler's gaze looks across the river toward the Serbian bank, directly facing the memorial plaque placed nearly 2,000 years ago by Emperor Traian (Tabula Traiana).

Another wonder hidden in the cliffs is Ponicova Cave, carved into the Ciucaru Mare massif—the largest and most fascinating karst cave system in the Danube Gorge. Its passages stretch for more than 1,600 meters, hollowed out by the creek of the same name, and its most unique feature is its direct exit onto the river. Visitors can access it from land via the Ponicova Gorges, or directly by boat through the entrance facing the Danube.
Located right next to the highlights of the Danube Gorges, along the DN-57 road and just 3.9 kilometers from the Decebalus sculpture, Bliss Dubova welcomes guests right on the riverbank. With a total capacity of 42 guests, it serves as a base for couples, groups of friends, and families alike.
Attractions and Activities along the Danube
Exploring the region does not end at Ponicova Cave and the Decebalus sculpture. The most captivating spots in the gorges are best reached via guided speedboat excursions departing from piers in Orșova and Dubova. From the water, you get a close-up look at Mraconia Monastery standing right at the base of the shoreline cliffs, the 2,000-year-old Roman Tabula Traiana carved into the Serbian hillside opposite, and Veterani Cave, accessible only by boat, which served for centuries as a fortified military observation post.
For panoramic summit views, take the easy Ciucaru Mare hiking trail starting directly from Dubova; reaching the edge of the cliffs reveals the most dramatic vista over the Great Kazan Gorge, where the river narrows between sheer rock walls. Moving slightly away from the Danube toward the northern karst plateau of the county near Ponoarele, you will find God's Bridge (Podul lui Dumnezeu), Romania's largest natural limestone bridge still open to vehicular traffic. History enthusiasts can head toward the county seat, Drobeta-Turnu Severin, where the restored ramparts of the Medieval Fortress of Severin and the riverside pillars of Trajan's Bridge, designed by the ancient architect Apollodorus of Damascus, echo the Dacian-Roman and Banat eras.
