The History of the Csiszár Baths
Closely linked to the legend and development of the Bálványos area, the story of the Csiszár Baths began in the valleys under the shadow of the ancient castle. For centuries, these places have hidden true natural treasures: rare mineral springs and therapeutic gas emanations. The true boom of the area began at the end of the 19th century, when Dénes Csiszár, a spirits producer from Târgu Secuiesc, realized the immense healing power of the volcanic activity happening beneath our feet. He purchased the land from the compossessorate in Turia and set out alone to explore the forest in search of hidden springs. His efforts paid off: he discovered no fewer than sixteen springs with therapeutic effects. By 1895, he built the first buildings of the resort—villas, a restaurant, and a dance hall—and the spot became the most beloved excursion destination in the surrounding area.
Between the two World Wars, the Csiszár resort became a true meeting place for the elite. Many members of the aristocracy of the time came here to tend to their health in the middle of the forests. After World War II, with the wave of communist nationalization in 1948, the resort became state property. In 2012, the spa resort and the forested areas returned to the ownership of the founder's great-great-grandchildren. The Csiszár Baths have been completely reborn in recent years through renovation works that kept the authentic and traditional charm of the place intact. Because the area is famous for its wildlife, the owners put safety first: the entire area is protected by a modern electric fence system. The Geological Secret Behind the Csiszár Baths
From a geographical and geological perspective, the Ciomatu massif represents one of the most intense and spectacular areas of post-volcanic activity in the whole of Europe. Even though the volcanoes died out a long time ago, the processes taking place deep within the earth continue to influence life on the surface every single day. Huge amounts of carbon dioxide and sulfurous gases escape to the surface through cracks in the earth's crust. When these gases meet groundwater, they give rise to carbonated, sparkling mineral waters. The uniqueness of the Csiszár Baths lies in their amazing diversity: within an extremely small space, numerous mineral waters spring up with completely different chemical compositions. For this reason, each pool here has a different color, a different smell, a different temperature and, most importantly, a different therapeutic effect. Additionally, four of the pools are quite large, making them excellent even for swimming.
The Legendary Pools and Springs of the Csiszár Baths

The Hammas Bath
The water in this pool has a gray-ash color. Geologists have explained that, under the influence of gases coming from the depths, iron sulfides dissolved from the rocks settle in the water, giving it this dark and dramatic hue. The Hammas pool is considered by locals to be the best natural remedy for people suffering from rheumatism, vein diseases, gout, or skin eczema.
The Chocolate Bath
This pool owes its name to the brownish-red ferrous sediment that settles at the bottom of the water, which closely resembles liquid chocolate. The water is extremely refreshing and, even on hot summer days, its temperature does not exceed 20-22 degrees Celsius. This water excellently stimulates blood circulation and leaves the skin smooth and firm.
The Timsós Pool
This is a pool with slightly warmer water and a yellowish tint. Thanks to its high mineral content, the water here is used especially for treating skin diseases, healing wounds, and relieving muscle or joint pain. The area is equipped with a special wooden sunbathing space and twelve changing cabins.
The "Vallató" Pool
Recognized for its extremely cold, carbonated water rich in sodium chloride, this pool is an excellent natural remedy, recommended especially for gynecological or neurological problems. Its name comes from the pure humor of the Szeklers: it is said that the water is so cold that anyone who steps into it will "confess all their secrets" in just a few seconds due to the thermal shock.
Mofetta: The Natural Gas That Saves Lives
A visit to Bálványos is incomplete without the famous mofettas—those dry carbon dioxide baths that are unique in the world. In addition to the well-known Puturosu (Smelly) Cave nearby, the Csiszár Baths park surprises its visitors with its own emanation points, where volcanic gases come to the surface directly through cracks in the soil. During a mofetta session, visitors stand or sit on benches in a specially constructed pool below ground level, where the carbon dioxide gas (being heavier than air) gathers invisibly. The gas is absorbed through the skin and helps dilate blood vessels, regulates blood pressure, and improves heart function.
