Thus, after the completion of the works, tourists arriving in the area will be able to enjoy:

• A central square transformed into a multifunctional socio-cultural space, with urban furniture suitable for providing a welcoming and comfortable environment. This will become the cultural hub of the UNESCO site.
• A revitalized Apothecary Square, with a small garden where medicinal plants will be cultivated to bring attention back to the medicinal plant pharmacy, an important tourist attraction of the village.
• An exhibition area in the central square, which will highlight the church walls and offer visitors an experience close to the architecture and history of the Fortified Church.
• A promenade area that will enhance the UNESCO site.

The works are scheduled to begin in September of the current year.

"By April 2027, the estimated time required by the beneficiary to complete the activities, investments will be made to arrange the historic center of the locality, by creating cultural, exhibition, and leisure spaces, centered around the Fortified Evangelical Church. By creating a harmonious, attractive, and pleasant environment around the fortified church and traditional houses in the area, Biertan will become more attractive to residents and tourists, thus stimulating economic and cultural activities throughout the entire county," reads a press release sent by the Regional Development Agency (RDA) Center.

The same source emphasizes that "the sustainability of investments will involve both visitors and the local community in a series of activities: competitions, multicultural shows, and interactive exhibitions, promoting local history and culture. Additionally, there is a proposal to organize an informal course for tourist guides and workshops for arts and crafts to preserve and promote local traditions."

Among the novelties included in the authorities' plans are:

• Setting up pavilions and tables for the flea market, compatible with the urban furniture used;
• Creating a pedestrian zone with green spaces near the church;
• Establishing a new lighting system with a series of minimal contemporary lighting elements;
• Installing public fountains in areas where residents, children, and visitors gather;
• Placing several specific urban furniture elements in the rehabilitated area: benches, trash bins, playground equipment, benches with tables, public toilets, sales pavilions, sales tables, bus stations, and bike racks.

The fortified church of Biertan has three defense walls, three bastions, and six towers (you can even climb one and see the panorama towards the commune). It is a cultural and religious tourist attraction in late Gothic style, which houses the largest altar in Transylvania (with 28 icons) and a 500-year-old oak wood sacristy with original ironwork, "a jewel of medieval technology" awarded for its locking mechanism, where the treasures of the citadel were kept safe from thieves (it has 19 locks), opened only with a single key.

In the Biertan Citadel, you can also find the famous lovers' prison. Legends say it was a room where couples who wanted to divorce were locked up. They stayed here for several weeks, sharing the space with a bed, a plate, and a fork. The strategy was successful because few couples remained convinced that separation was the way.

The 28.5 million lei were won by the Biertan Commune and the Evangelical Church Parish CA through the program "A Region with Sustainable Tourism" - Conservation, protection, and enhancement of the UNESCO cultural heritage.
