The beginning of September is the perfect time to explore the beauty of Romania. Why do we say that? Because the temperature is milder, the summer crowds are (mostly) gone, and the landscape begins to take on its autumn colors.

1. Transfăgărășan

The Transfăgărășan is considered one of the most spectacular mountain roads in the world, thanks to the breathtaking vistas of the Făgăraș Mountains. In early September, when the days are still long and the air is fresh and cool, the road winds through mountain peaks covered in greenery and coniferous forests.

If you are visiting the area, you can also discover the Bâlea Lake and the waterfall of the same name.

You might even encounter bears. However, be very careful! These are wild animals and can be unpredictable at times. Do not feed them, and do not approach them.

2. Danube Delta

The Danube Delta is a dream destination for nature and bird lovers alike, regardless of the season. However, September is an ideal month to explore this unique ecosystem, as the temperatures are just right—neither too hot nor too cold.

You probably were already aware of this, but let us remind you of an important fact: the Delta is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most valuable wetlands in Europe.

If you decide to visit, you can take a boat trip, birdwatch, taste traditional food, and meet wonderful locals.

3. Sighișoara

Sighișoara, the medieval citadel that is listed as a UNESCO historic center, is a perfect place for a journey into the rich culture and history of Romania. Furthermore early autumn brings a unique atmosphere where the cobblestone streets and colorful houses take on a special charm.

If you decide to make the city your destination, be sure to visit the Clock Tower and the streets that make up the protected area. Once you have entered the walls of the city be prepared to be captivated by the small souvenir shops or feel free to enjoy a good coffee at one of the local establishments.

4. Maramureș

Perhaps even more so than other destinations, Maramureș is a land worth visiting in any season. It is a place where traditions are faithfully preserved, and exceptionally beautiful rural landscapes dominate your sight. However, September is the perfect month to visit this region as nature begins to change its colors, making local crafts and traditional customs even more visible.

Here, you can visit the Merry Cemetery in Săpânța, as well as one of the many renowned Wooden Churches of the area, some of which are declared UNESCO monuments.

5. Brașov

Another place we can never recommend enough is Brașov, a destination that perfectly combines history with nature. At the beginning of September, the city might be less loud but just as charming. If you're a hiking enthusiast, Poiana Brașov, located just a few kilometers away, offers hikes through coniferous forests and spectacular views of the mountains.

But if you prefer to stay closer to the city, you shouldn't miss the Black Church or Mount Tâmpa. The autumn scenery there will surely captivate you.
